Research activities

PhD since 2023: "Peatlands and associated oligotrophic habitats of the Armorican Massif (Brittany, France): Relationships between conservation value, ecosystem services and uses in the context of adaptation to global changes."

My research focuses on peatlands and the complex of peaty habitats associated with them.

Peatlands are at the heart of many issues, both in terms of biodiversity and responses to global change. These ecosystems, which were extensively exploited during the 20th century, are becoming increasingly rare. It is estimated that in France, the area of peatlands has halved over the last century, due to drainage, peat extraction and the intensification of agricultural practices.

Peatlands and associated peat habitats provide a multitude of ecosystem services that contribute to the mitigation of global change (carbon storage, regulation of water flows), but are also vulnerable to these changes. Although knowledge is abundant on an international scale, it remains limited in the context of the Armorican Massif (western France).

The TOURBZH project, financed by the Brittany Region, the Direction Régionale de l'Environnement, de l'Aménagement et du Logement and the European Union, aims to study the various components of the peatland ecosystem and oligotrophic habitats (vegetation, soil, etc.), apply several conservation status assessment methods, and evaluate ecosystem services on four Natural Reserves.

This involves the acquisition of data in terms of biodiversity and physico-chemical data, but also concerning the uses and social representations of these sites, which need to be placed in their landscape context.

In particular, one of the objectives will be to determine whether the current and potential state of conservation of peat bogs and associated peaty environments in the Armorican Massif is helping to meet current challenges linked to global change.
